PTO MEETING MINUTES FOR SEPTEMBER 17, 2009

Meeting was called to order at 6:50 p.m.

Kristin Cawthorne welcomed everyone to the first PTO meeting of the 2009-2010 school year.

We are trying to "Go Green".  We have a new database called PTO Manager.  We will be continuing to gather and input e-mail addresses of all parents.  Your first e-mail from the website will be a password to log into PTO Manager.  Please follow the instructions to enter the website.  There, you can input your child's name, teacher's name, grade, and if there are any activities or events you are interested in helping out in.  Our ultimate goal is to minimize the amount of paper/flyers we send home with the students.

Mary Kirsten gave the treasurer report.  We started off the school year with $4614.56.  We have spent $1200.00 to buy D.A.R.E. shirts for the school, which is something we try to do every year.  We also are helping to raise enough money for a new fitness trail and other school improvements as we can.

We are having 3 major events this year, the Fall Festival, the 5K run, and the Pride-A-Thon.  The Fall Festival is on Nov 7 and the teachers are busy planning what booths they are going to run.  All of the proceeds they make will go back to their grade.  If you are interested in helping out, get with your child's teacher and see if they need any volunteers to help them and their grade make the most $$.  After the teacher's have signed up for their booths, we will be offering the opportunity to parents or others in the community to buy a spot for $25.00 to sell their wares.  We will also be having the popular Dunk Tank and Hayride, which were a bit hit last year.   Upcoming Sprit Night at Chix-Fil-A on Sept 24 from 5pm-8pm.  Please come and tell them you are with Lamarque Elementary and support our school.

Box tops have been a huge success!  Last year, we made almost $3600.00 for the school just from collecting box tops. We will be having a contest starting Sept 28, which the winning class will receive an ice cream party.  If you have more than one student, please separate their box tops in a plastic baggie with their name and teacher's name on a piece of paper inside, so the right student and teacher will get credit for the contest.

Mrs. Mancheno gave the principal's report.  The first weeks of school have gotten off to a great start!  We have become a Community of Caring School, which is based on 5 basic principles - Caring, Respect, Responsibility, Trust, and Family.  We have also started a brand new program called Farm's To School, which is a program in which every single student gets provided with a free fresh fruit or vegetable snack every single day.  We are only 1 of 10 schools in the district that have the opportunity to provide this program for our Lamarque families.

Our custodial staff continually strives to keep our school protected against the H1N1 virus with the use of 2 different environmentally friendly cleaners on all hard surfaces.  Teachers, staff and students are always encouraged to use proper flu-prevention hygiene.  We will also be offering the opportunity a free swine flu vaccine to all students when it comes out at a later date.

We will also be starting the hearing screenings on K-1st grade this-coming week and next.  Open house for grade 3-5 will be on September 29 and for K-2 on October 1.

Officer Viera came in and spoke about things you can do to help prevent burglary of your home or car.

Meeting adjourned at 8:08 p.m.
